2020 has made the world rethink, rediscover, improve, change, evolve and become more responsible. A time where the world has become more aware of their environment, a time where the world has remembered the power of touch, colour, individuality and one’s passion for colour and creativity.
During lockdown, people focused on their health and skincare, applying a very natural Make-Up look, bronzers and highlighters to enhance natural features, then proceeded onto getting creative with the use of Make-Up to try and feel “normal” again. They started experimenting with Make-Up, using bits and bobs from their home to create something new. Make-Up has become an art, a creative gateway, a place of peace during a time of uncertainty, a time where being outside had become a fear, it created a space to go to in order to release those stresses and create looks to express their emotions in a positive way.
If we consider the comparison between where make up originated and where Make-Up is today, we will find that over the ages Make-Up, like the human- race has evolved. In the Egyptian era Make-Up was used for eye protection, power and wealth, but today the focus of Make-Up is to enhance features, become creative and boost one’s self-esteem. The best Make-Up artists in the world now have greater knowledge of color and textures and how they appear on various mediums. The methods for color utilization take artists’ comprehension of color to a whole new level, moving past the basics that are typically discussed within Make-Up artistry such as complimentary and contrasting hues. They have now discovered everything that affects Make-Up artistry regarding color, texture, product formulations and finishes, which in turn affects your wardrobe and Make-Up selection and it is considered how color is interpreted psychologically. These rare skills have given artists a new-found wisdom that have impressed some of the toughest art directors but today, we’re taking it back to basics, back to the beginning and the fundamentals in Make-Up looks.
If you are a newbie to Make-Up and want to try your hand at this art, try these Make-Up tips:
- Add some colour on your eyes. Do this step first to avoid any eyeshadow particles discolouring your foundation, wipe away any particles that have fallen with a Make-Up brush.
Apply mascara. As thick as you like. Then, use a disposable mascara wand to separate the uneven clumps.
2. Use a foundation that matches your skin colour and apply it with a foundation brush or a slightly wet beauty blender sponge.
3. For a more contoured, bronzed look. Get a bronzer 2 or 3 shades darker than your skin as well as a highlighter to contour and emphasize your facial features. Apply the bronzer just under your cheek bone, under your jawline and the corners of your forehead, then add highlighter to your cheek bone, bridge of nose and under the arch of your brows.
4. Fill your brows with a brow shadow or pencil and create a natural arch. You can add a concealer under the brow to give it a more defined look but make sure to blend this.
5. To create a fuller lip look, draw a line with lip liner just outside the edges of your lips and fill with gloss, get as creative with lip colours as you like.
6. Spray fixing spray at the end of your Make-Up application to keep the Make-Up looking dewy, fresh and set for the day.
REMEMBER! Make-Up is your own expression and your own creation, there is no right or wrong. Make-Up can be sophisticated; it can be fun and even colourful. Make-Up is an art, an expression of your emotions. Play with different textures, play with different colours, play with different brands until you find what you’re comfortable with, then keep working on your techniques. Make-Up is ever evolving; there is absolutely no limit to it!
